Nurturing the Next Generation of Growers

In today’s world, the rising cost of fresh produce can make it difficult for many whānau to access nutritious kai. To address this, we at Grow Kai Organic and Kimiora Trust in Whanganui have opened our Kimiora Papakainga to local school groups.

Our program aims to educate students about the benefits of growing vegetables from seeds and empower them to become self-sufficient. By spending time on the Kimiora Papakainga, students learn valuable gardening skills, connect with nature, and gain a deeper appreciation for the food they eat.

Our program includes:
  • Hands-on gardening – Students participate in all aspects of vegetable production, from planting seeds to harvesting and preparing meals.
  • Cultural education – Learn about traditional Maori gardening practices and the importance of sustainable food systems.
  • Nutritional education – Discover the health benefits of eating fresh, locally-grown produce.
  • Community engagement – Connect with other students, teachers, and community members, fostering a sense of belonging and shared purpose.

By providing these opportunities, we hope to inspire the next generation of growers and help everyone access healthy, affordable food.
